索尼官方宣布，PS3主机将于3月23日在欧洲、非洲、中东、澳大利亚等地区发布。不幸的是，正如此前的猜测，PS3这次仅发布60GB硬盘版本，售价599欧元，首发100万台，20GB版本将在今年晚些时候视玩家需求决定是否推出。与此同时，36款首发游戏和6种附件也已确认。

在主机和游戏发布的同时，索尼还会进行一次系统升级，以进一步释放PS3“无穷的潜力”。

在36款首发游戏中，索尼自家提供12款，EA、Activision、Namco Bandai、Take 2、Vivendi Universal、育碧、世嘉等第三方大型游戏厂商也将推出各自的最新作品，其中不乏重量级大作。按发行发行方式计算，有8款通过“PLAYSTATION”网络推出，28款以光盘形式上市。具体名单如下：
